The Resurgence of Ibrahimovic

by Julio Ramirez, senior reporter

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is a Swedish soccer player who is world class. He suffered an injury in late December of 2017. It was a very serious knee ligament injury that almost threatened to end his career. But he fought his way back through intense rehab and physical therapy for 3 months.

His contract with Manchester United in England was not renewed and he wasn’t sure where he would land until he was signed by the La Galaxy this season. According to Ibrahimovic, he said, “his sights were always with La Galaxy even before he signed with Manchester United.”

So he actually has the chance to play with La Galaxy this year, but one of the astonishing things is that he received a 95% wage cut from last year to this year. Last year he was paid $27 million a year and this year he is getting paid $1.7 million for his one year contract with the Galaxy.

If his first game back with the Galaxy is any indication how he is feeling, this should be a great season for Zlatan to face LA Galaxy hometown rivals LAFC. On his first game back from injury he was put on the bench for the first game.

The whole first half and a quarter of the second half LA Galaxy was down on 3-0 until they were on the verge of a comeback. By the time Zlatan came in LA Galaxy had already scored two goals.

Until it was time minute 70’ Zlatan was standing at half field when all you hear is the fans cheering on and waiting for the moment that they've been waiting for all day long. Zlatan scores a half-volley from nearly half field over the keeper and into the net to make it 3-3.

It was the 90th minute and the crowd was content with a tie to start the season but then came Zlatan again to score a header to the far post to make it 4-3 and the whole stadium lit up with excitement.
