Can You Afford to be Healthy?

 By Amisha Temal

At my former job, my coworkers and I visited a community farm located in East New York, Brooklyn. The East New York Community Farm grows and provides agriculture to the people who live nearby sustainably and for free. They grow over 70 different types of vegetables. The farm also provides garden beds for members of the community to grow their produce. The farm has been supporting East New York since 2000. The farm was around 2 acres big. The garden was well kept and organized. There was a large selection of produce to choose from. There were cherry tomatoes, okra, long beans, kale, cilantro, bitter melon, and swiss chard. Many individuals living in East New York are also immigrants from Asia, the Caribbean, and West Africa. The farm caters to the residents of East New York’s cultural background by growing produce with cultural significance like Jamaican callaloo, pimento peppers, scotch bonnet peppers, etc.  On the day I visited the farm, around 15 people were present working. It was around 10:00 am and they were just arriving at the farm for the day. They walked in and talked amongst themselves and exchanged friendly remarks and good mornings. A couple of minutes later they were in the garden working. It was a scorching hot day and I had nothing but admiration for the generous workers gardening out in the heat.

Something I couldn’t help but notice is the lack of grocery stores in East New York. This is because East New York is a Food Desert. A Food Desert is an urban or rural area that has limited access to affordable produce, dairy, or healthy and fresh food. Most Food Deserts tend to be in low-income and poor neighborhoods with racially marginalized residents. In many cases, residents live more than a mile away from grocery stores that provide affordable healthy food. The far distance is another huge factor contributing to the difficulty of accessing healthy food since many people in low-income neighborhoods don’t and can’t afford to have a car. Going to a grocery store miles away requires time that not many people have. The US Department of Agriculture estimates that around 23 million people live in food deserts. It’s estimated that around 3 million people in New York City live in Food Deserts.

Hispanic and Black families predominantly occupy East New York. In the United States, Black and Hispanic neighborhoods tend to suffer from food insecurity at an elevated rate. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, approximately 22.5% of African- American and 18.5% Hispanic households suffer from food insecurity. This is an outcome of systemic racism creating numerous obstacles blocking racially marginalized individuals from escaping financial issues. Hispanic and Black people face discrimination in work environments and receive income inequality more than any other racial group. They often receive fewer promotions and raises than their white co-workers. This leads to them receiving a lower median wage than deserved. The absence of a solid and reasonable income makes it increasingly difficult for Black and Hispanic individuals to live a healthy life.

When individuals can’t access or afford healthy food they are left with no other choice but to purchase and consume unhealthy processed food from fast-food chains since they provide relatively cheap food. Ironically, Fast food places are much more common in poor communities than healthy food. Fast food places are also increasingly common in areas where a large number of people of color live. If you have ever been to New York City, you would immediately notice the surplus of fast-food restaurants. Places with a slew of fast-food restaurants and an absence of establishments that distribute healthy food are food swamps.

The existence of Food Swamps contributes to the decline in the health of millions of people in America. Obviously eating only food with high calories, sodium,  and fats will take a huge toll on one’s physical health. The most widespread health issue caused by Food Swamps is obesity. Marginalized residents residing in urban or rural areas in the US tend to have higher rates of obesity in relation to residents of wealthier communities in the US. The high rate of obesity leads to other health complications like diabetes, heart disease, and cardiovascular disease. The lack of exposure to healthy food is especially harmful to children. 28% of children within countries with high rates of food insecurity do not have secure access to healthy food. Studies also revealed that children born to food insecure parents are at higher risk of having anemia and asthma. Lack of healthy food also can cause delays in social and physical development. This contributes to children struggling in their studies and getting low grades.

My admiration for the East New York Farm and the workers who run it skyrockets when considering all the difficulties that come with people not having access to good food. It’s sad that it’s difficult in the first place. How can we combat Food Inequity? We can do more than just open up more affordable grocery stores. We can open Food pantries, have cities provide healthy community meals, have health facilities distribute information of the healthy food crisis in America, and much more. We can take empty lots (which there’s an abundance of in New York City) and transform them into community farms.  The list goes on and on. All in all, it’s important to help each other out. If you know someone who suffers from food insecurity, encourage them to reach out to organizations like Why Hunger, Feeding America, Black Urban Growers for support and resources. Contacting local food banks or soup kitchens is a great idea as well. A little support can go a long way.

Top 5 Movies to watch on HBO Max for Fun

 By Bennett Thomas

I’m someone that watches movies over the weekend. I watch them for fun and joy. I have had HBO Max since last year because of the hype around it and the amount of interesting movies that are in their library. The movies selected are based on my opinion. I dug out some of HBO Max’s best movies and listed them from best to least based on the movie’s plot.

  1. The Dark Knight (2008)

If you are looking for a good action-thriller film that is based on a superhero, this is for you. In this movie, the menace known as the Joker wreaks chaos on the people of Gotham. Batman has to go through one of the greatest psychological and physical obstacles of his ability to defeat injustice. This movie has so many action scenes and has some of the most memorable dialogue in 21st- century cinema. This movie is thrilling in many ways and a good start to your weekend. I’m not sure if it could get better.

  1. Goodfellas (1990)

This movie is a masterpiece based on the acting and interesting scenes. I would say it was ahead of its time. This mob drama still stands out as a hands-down classic. This film is a true story about the rise and fall of mob associate Henry Hill narrating his life of crime from childhood up throughout the 80s. This movie became successful thanks to the kinetic camerawork, editing and obviously the performances of the main cast.

  1. The Suicide Squad (2021)

This recent DCEU film is probably one of the best films of 2021. This was kind of a sequel to the 2016 film but it looked like a reboot more than anything. This movie stars DC outcasts who are sent into hostile territory on a secret mission from which they probably won't return due to how dangerous it is. This movie had lots of comedy and action, but it had realistic violence so it is rated-R. Aside from that, the film is surprising and is a dark-humor blockbuster.

  1. The Matrix (1999)

This movie is on the forefront of modern Sci-fi/action movies during the new millennium. It made people in that time think if we are actually living in a computer simulation, that’s how big it was during that time. This movie is about Computer programmer Thomas Anderson known by his hacking alias Neo who believes that a guy named Morpheus can answer his question,  What is the Matrix? They would have to fight against enemies that could cost Neo something more than his life. This movie was the start of a new franchise and now in December there’s a new Matrix movie so if you want to catch that then you should see how it all started.

  1. Elf (2003)

This movie is a Christmas classic that is very funny and charming. This movie is about Buddy the Elf who is a human raised in the North Pole and now sets on an adventure to find his biological father in New York City. During the movie, he has trouble adjusting with life in the Big Apple and does pranks of his own. This film became a huge holiday hit with Will Ferrell’s slapstick comedy.

The Top Athletes on Long Island

 By Keenbelynn Bellande

¨Put the work in...inside and out of school. Never settle for less.¨ - Kevin DeCristoforo

¨If you think you´re in love with one sport, another one can change your mind just like that. Go for it.¨

-Sanaia Estime

After a year and a half of unorthodox teaching and learning, we are slowly getting back to normalcy. These unorthodox situations did not only affect those in the classrooms. It also took a toll on our athletes. Despite all of these unprecedented hardships, Sanaia Estime and Kevin DeCristoforo have claimed their respective spots as the top players of Long Island in the year 2021 and were showcased in Newsday at the end of the fall sports season.

Kevin DeCristoforo, a current senior at West Hempstead High School, plays a key role on our Boys Varsity Soccer team as the central defender. When speaking with DeCristoforo, he describes his journey as having a number of “ups and downs.” In saying this, he refers to the off season or low points in his career where things may not have been going as planned. In spite of this, he believes that these low points were just as, if not more crucial than the achievements. He describes himself as a more confident player now as a result of the adversity that he has faced over the years.

DeCristoforo began playing soccer when he was four years old on the West Hempstead Chiefs soccer team. Since he began at such a young age, Kevin has played on a number of teams and these teams have shaped him into the player that he is today. It has made him a more confident and assertive leader. With that being said, playing on a varsity level with little or a lot of experience proves to be a difficult task no matter what. Both Sanaia Estime and Kevin DeCristoforo describe it as a change of pace. DeCristoforo specifically states that “the play of the game gets a lot faster,” compared to the pace played in Middle School.

In the same manner, Sanaia Estime also plays an essential role on the Girl’s Varsity Volleyball team as an outside hitter. After missing a majority of the regular prior season, Estime is grateful to hear that her coach still believes in her and thinks that she is off to a strong start. Estime began playing volleyball as just a hobby or to stay in shape. It essentially began as just a means to an end. She didn’t realize her full potential until her freshman year of high school, when she was accepted onto the varsity team with open arms. Although she quickly found her place on the team, it wasn’t always easy. She initially felt intimidated as the young freshman among experienced Juniors and Seniors on the team.

Estime had received one of the highest honors: The All County Award. Despite being down on herself or not realizing her full potential as a volleyball player, this award opened her eyes up to a whole new world of possibilities. She currently plays on a club team, Sportime. Being around players of different skill sets pushed Estime toward becoming a better athlete. She quickly began to go for balls and new skills that she wouldn’t typically do. Not only did she notice this change, so did her coach and teammates. Both Estime and DeCristoforo are involved in a number of extra curriculars. In addition to volleyball and soccer, Estime and DeCristoforo are part of the National Honor Society along with the Art Honor Society. How exactly do they balance it all? Both athletes claimed that it was a combination of time management and sheer determination.

Both athletes have clearly put in a lot of hardwork and effort to where they are now. What exactly does the future hold for them both? Estime along with DeCristoforo plan on playing at the collegiate level. They both hope that their respective programs, along with the West Hempstead Athletics Department, continue to flourish.

In the Garden

 By Mayumi Soul

She sat on the bench in her family’s garden twiddling the hem of her dress as she patiently waited. For what exactly, she didn’t know. Earlier, she had come out because she felt extremely sick. Her father was busy and wouldn’t bother to care for her. She was always very sickly, and never truly got care for it. She thought if she sat outside instead of sitting in her room whilst the maids came in and out to clean and organize, she would feel better. But nothing had changed. She looked around trying to see if she could catch a bunny looking for strawberries, or a bee pollinating a rose. Nothing. Just birds asking each other why the day seems to drag on so slowly. She sniffled. She wondered why there seemed to be nothing exciting to distract her today unlike every other day.

The summer sun kissed her sunhat that covered her head, shoulders, arms, and thighs. Her aunt had given it to her for her birthday, but had forgotten that she was young and small. The sunhat was very large, and she loved it of course. The fact that it was so large made her love it more. She loved that it provided more shade to keep her cool. Two coughs made their way out of her. A small gust of wind breezed past her shoulder, and gave her a small shiver. She sneezed. The small wind slightly rustled the greenery, and surprisingly, that was the most exciting thing she had seen all day.

Her family’s enormous Victorian home that sat behind her added no shade, despite its height. The silence became deafening, so she let out a large exhale. After that came a cough. Her attempt to add noise to the silent world didn’t help much, because the sound of that exhale echoed through her mind. She wanted a different distraction. She got up and walked slowly to the other side of the garden, where a small radio sat waiting to be used. She brought it back over to her spot and turned the knob until the static stopped. Another cough. Nocturne in E flat by Chopin played. She knew the song by heart. She had heard it all the time as she grew up, and learned it during her piano lessons. She heard it all the time, yet she never got sick of it. She let out a cough. The song surrounded her, and she felt like she was wrapped in a comfortable knit blanket. She slowly began to doze off. She dreamt that her mother held her hand and walked her off to a beautiful palace where the beautiful Nocturne played day in and day out.

Her father had finally finished his work. He came out to tell her, but when he saw her, she was limp. He let out a small sigh. He sat on the bench next to her. There were no more small coughs, no more sneezes, no more sniffles. She was quiet. He had lifted her and placed her on his lap. He held her silent body and rocked back and forth to the tempo of her favorite song playing. He turned up the volume of the radio and tried to rest with her in his arms, as this would be the last time he could hold her. He was silently looking down at her, and when he finally looked up, he saw a bunny scurry past to get to the strawberries, and he heard the faint buzzing of a bee pollinating the roses.

A Game of Russian Roulette

By: Keenbelynn Bellande

To be black in America

Like a game of Russian Roulette,

Is waking up and being unsure of what's to come.

It’s having someone who holds all the POWER

Spin the cylinder,

Pull the trigger,

And Click

One shot gone. Three shots remain.

To be black in America

Is a white man feeling THREATENED

By a little black boy with radiant black skin,

Instilling terror with just a hood, candy, and tea.

Again, the ones with the most power:

Spin the cylinder,

Pull the trigger,

And Boom

Another shot gone. Two shots remain.

To be black in America

Is being a walking CONTRADICTION…

When you fight for PEACE and LOVE in a country,

And they won't fight for you.

When those who are sworn to protect you,

Do the complete opposite.

When your life is cut short,

With the introduction of VIOLENCE into your own home.

Having a police officer spin the cylinder,

Pull the trigger,

And Boom.

Another shot gone. One shot remains.

To be black in America

Is turning heartbreak into kindness and hope.

O’ to black in America,

Whether it be celebrated, ignored, or exploited.

It’s knowing that Black is beautiful

And it's worth holding on to that last shot.

Lose Weight This Summer

By Gianna Feglia

We have all been there, trying crazy ways to lose weight faster. I hate to be the one to break it to you, but that will never work. As many articles and books claim they can help you lose weight, in under a month or maybe even a week. I can assure you that will never happen and can even lead to health issues or eating disorders. In my article, you will find healthy ways to lose weight sufficiently.

1. Work Out Efficiently

Working out AT LEAST three times a week is a great way to lose weight, and just to stay healthy overall. Working out promotes a healthy mindset and gives many motivation on their weightloss journey. Anywhere between 15 to 30 minutes a day is recommended for just starting out.

2. Eat In A Calorie Deficit

“A calorie deficit occurs when the number of calories a person consumes in a day is smaller than the number of calories they burn. The body needs to burn a certain number of calories to perform all its functions each day.” Calorie deficits are extremely effective and healthy for a person to do. Eating in one will promise results.

3. Cut Out Sugary Drinks

Once I made this cutoff I never wanted to go back. I understand this is a lot to ask for and it’s completely normal to have a soda or juice box once in a while. Sugary drinks caused many problems for me personally. These drinks caused more bloating and even acne. When I switched to just water I noticed an insane amount of difference. I’m not saying to cut it off completely because that is not possible, just monitor yourself and have self control.

4. Cut Out Processed Foods

Processed foods are usually high in added sugars, added fats and calories. They are  specifically designed to cause binge eating. Making it so you have self control and allowing cheat days for processed foods is a great thing to do.

5. Stop Letting The Scale Discourage You

The scale is always wrong. Some days you drop extra low, some days you weigh extra

high. Once you start working out, you will gain muscle which will make the scale

number go up. Do not be alarmed by this, this is actually a great thing! The best thing is

to stay strong and remember this will be a journey.

6. Eat More Fruits and Vegetables

Although fruits have lots of sugar, they make such great snack replacements. This sugar is natural so please do not get discouraged. Vegetables are almost always low in calories

The Rise of Depression During the Pandemic

 By Mayumi Soul

During the pandemic, more and more people have found themselves feeling alone, depressed, and/or hopeless. To many people, everything seems to be crumbling down and adding weight to their shoulders. With each negative thing in the world, more weight is added. The pandemic, protests, discrimination, lack of social contact, and everything else just adding pressure to people and leading their mental state to a point where they feel major anxiety and symptoms of depression. Many mental hospitals everywhere have been at maximum capacity and psychologists and psychiatrists all over the world have been saying that this mental health pandemic should be taken just as seriously as the Covid-19 pandemic.

Depression and anxiety are already serious issues, but now during the pandemic the amount of people that have gotten these mental disorders has skyrocketed. Many psychologists have been finding out that there has been a very large rise in cases of depression. Knowing about mental disorders such as depression and anxiety is very important, because it can help us have knowledge of how to help ourselves and others when they’re going through a depressive episode, or having an anxiety attack, or anything else of the sort.

The Covid-19 pandemic was an unexpected shock to billions of people all over the world. With it has come sickness, controversy, and another pandemic that not many people have taken as seriously as Covid. Psychologists and psychiatrists have declared the significant rise in depression, anxiety, and suicide a “mental health pandemic”.

Many people have been losing their jobs and isolating themselves, which has led to many feeling alone, depressed, and anxious. 22 year old Philaé Lachaux who was interviewed by the New York Times has said “The pandemic feels like a big stop in our lives.. One that puts us so low that I wonder, ‘What’s the point?’” Many people have felt a similar way to Lachaux, and because of this, school guidance counselors, psychologists, and psychiatrists everywhere are becoming overwhelmed with the amount of cases of depression, anxiety, self harm, and suicide.

The demographic that is mostly affected is 18 to 24 year olds. According to the New York Times, “In the United States, a quarter of 18- to 24-year-olds said they had seriously considered suicide, one report said.” It is thought that this age group is affected because they are in the prime of their lives. Because of the pandemic, they can’t do anything that they would like to do while they’re young. They can’t live their lives freely as they usually would during that age.

Catherine Seymour, head of research at the Mental Health Foundation, has said that young people living in poorer households are more likely to experience anxiety and depression, according to a study conducted. According to her, “It may be that those in poorer households are more likely to lack enough space and internet access to help with schoolwork and communication with their friends, they may also be affected by their parents’ financial worries and stress.”

People who have less money have even more to worry about, because of financial issues, the pandemic, personal struggles, and more. All of these things can really pile up on someone and mess with their mental health.

Some things that many mental health professionals have suggested can help with depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, and more is to first try to talk to the suicide hotline. The hotline is not just for people who want to commit suicide. Many people who just needd someone to talk to go to the suicide hotline. If that doesn’t help, another way is to be productive with your free time. According to the New York Presbyterian, you should “Ask yourself: ‘What’s the problem? I’m bored, I’m in isolation. OK, so I could exercise, I can contact people, I can make plans and do chores. I can look at this as a challenge to identify short-term and long-term goals.’' One more way that you can try to help yourself is to reframe your perspective.

The New York Presbyterian also says “It’s OK to feel upset and to acknowledge to yourself and to others these are difficult times. Yet this could be an opportunity to think about what you value or really want to do with your life. If you look at this period as intentional practice of not going out to restaurants and bars, you may realize you can thrive without those routines.” There are many other ways that can help someone feel better about life right now, such as doing a hobby, talking to people (it can be online if not face to face), and more.

Always remember that if you, the reader, feel depressed, anxious, hopeless, or anything else of the sort, you are not alone. Things won’t stay like this forever, and there are a lot of people who care.

Top 5 Places to Grab a Slice of Pizza in West Hempstead

 By: Lillian Fackelman

Pizza, an Italian dish consisting of a flat base and crust of dough baked with a topping of tomato sauce and cheese.  Pizza is a staple food for most people in New York.  Eating a slice of pizza is easy, quick, and delicious.  Pizza is also decently healthy, I mean it's got almost all of the food groups.  It has fruit, vegetables, grain, and dairy.  It might be what someone calls the perfect meal.  Often eaten as lunch, dinner, or midnight snack.  Even breakfast, if you're me.  Pizza is just as enjoyable hot or cold.

Pizza is something that most people eat on a fairly regular basis.  If someone says they don’t like pizza, they first are crazy and second probably haven’t had real New York pizza.  It is pretty well known that New York has the best pizza.  I am here to tell you the top 5 places to grab a slice of real New York pizza in/near West Hempstead.

#1: Gino’s Pizzeria & Restaurant

Located at 619 Woodfield Road, West Hempstead, Gino’s Pizza is the top rated pizza place in West Hempstead, New York.  With 4.6 out of 5 stars on Google Reviews.  Leena Joseph said, “This is the BEST pizza in Nassau County!! And I've tried all of them! The crust, the cheese and the sauce are amazing! Order a plain pie, well done and you won't be disappointed!”

Gino’s sells a slice of pizza for $3.00.  A little bit pricier than the other slices in WH, but not by much.  Let me tell you something, it is well worth the extra money.  Gino’s regular pie is delicious, but it is their specialty pies that sets them above the rest.  Sue, from West Hempstead, says, “The grandma pie with vodka sauce is to die for!”

#2: LaRosa’s Restaurant & Pizzeria

LaRosa’s of West Hempstead is one of the more popular pizza spots located in the center of West Hempstead, on Hempstead Turnpike.  LaRosa’s is rated 4.4 out of 5 stars.  Ryan Skoulatos said, “La Rosa's pizza belongs honorably in the rankings of Long Island's pizza game…” LaRosa’s prices are comparable to other pizzerias in the neighborhood.  With a regular slice costing $2.90.  In David Schick’s review of LaRosa’s, he states, “If you want a great meal with great service and good prices I promise you will not be disappointed.”

Besides good pizza and good food, LaRosa’s family friendly atmosphere adds to the positive experience.  While taking a look at the many great reviews, I noticed a common theme of LaRosa’s being family friendly.  “It's a warm, friendly place where families can relax and enjoy a meal together,” says Geraldine Steiner.

#3: Hunki’s Kosher Pizza

Hunki’s is one of the most well known Kosher pizza places in Nassau County.  Hunki’s is located at 338 Hempstead Avenue, West Hempstead NY.  With super loyal customers, Hunki’s Kosher Pizza is rated 4.4 out of 5 stars.  So many of the reviews mentioned the consistent good service and great pizza.  For example, Drew W states, “The food is consistently good at a reasonable price…”

Hunki’s charges $2.50 for a slice of pizza, which is on the low end of prices for pizza in the West Hempstead area.  What it lacks in ambiance, it makes up in quality.  Hunki’s is the place for quick, consistently good pizza.  In addition to pizza, its Israeli cuisine is worth trying.  Elliot Rosenberg raves that, "Food was amazing I had a falafel and pizza both were great.”

#4: Romeo’s Pizza

On the border of West Hempstead and Franklin Square, Romeo’s Pizza is a local favorite.  This cash only, family owned, old-school pizzeria is known for the authentic and delicious Italian flavors.  Romeo’s is loved by many, with their 4.6 out of 5 stars.

Known for its authentic cuisine, and reasonable pricing, Romeo’s has been a family favorite for years.  Its location and large parking lot add to the experience.  A review by Rick Mazzone suggests, “For a great dining experience with impeccable service and the best pricing for restaurants on Long Island; do yourself a favor and make a visit to Romeo's.” It truly is the best pricing, at $2.25 a slice.

#5: Avellino’s Pizzeria & Catering

Located at 279 Nassau Blvd, Garden City South, NY 11530.  Avellino’s is just North of West Hempstead.  With 4 out of 5 stars, Avellino’s is loved by all of its surrounding neighborhoods, Garden City, Garden City South, West Hempstead, and Franklin Square.  This little pizzeria has a lot of heart.  Avellino’s supports West Hempstead school’s fundraisers and events.  Frequently donating a percentage of Tuesday orders to support the West Hempstead School district.

Known for their daily specials, Avellino’s might be the best pizza bargain around.  Avellino’s has multiple lunch deals, the most popular being 2 slices and a fountain soda for $5.00.  Purchasing a single slice is $3.00, with that price you might as well get the extra slice and soda.  Take it from David Saenz, “Great food at great prices especially if you take advantage of one of their numerous daily deals.”

Fast Food, Friend, or Foe?

 By Babacar Seck, April 2021

Fast food has been a part of our lives for decades, some of us might not even know what life was before it. Large fast food companies like McDonalds, Popeyes, and Burger King have been around since the 1900, even if they were different back then.

As the times change, so do food regulations, and as it gets lax in some places, people start to find ways to get people to buy their products, in more phycological ways.

And with such addicting food choices that can lead to spikes in blood sugar, and rapid obesity, it’s no wonder many people are attempting to halt fast food companies from continuing to serve such unhealthy foods, and look back on their advertising.

Many people feel fine consuming fast food, or don’t care about the side effects, even though there are many warnings strung throughout the media. Eating Fast food can have serious side effects, such as blood sugar spikes, obesity, depression and anxiety according to articles on the Washington Post, as well as articles on Healthline. Many people know this, and yet still eat fast food regularly. How do they get you, the consumer to buy their product?

Well, It’s about advertising. Making their stores open 24 hours is one way they make it easier for you to buy their product. They use colors and pictures to lure you into their establishments, where they can not only get you to use your money, but also get you to come back for more. Using tricks like super sizing for a small cost.

Of course, those aren’t the only tricks Fast food companies have up their sleeves. They use their menu formatting, using 9.99 and 3.75 to make you think you only spend 9 dollars, or 3 dollars, when you’re effectively spending 10, or 4. By using combos, they get you to think that you're spending less money. That however, distracts you from the large quantities of food you're buying.

Your wallet isn’t the only thing you should be wary of at your local fast food joint, considering the lack of nutrition in most fast food items. During a study on the effects of junk food, 12 men ate only junk food for 5 days, without eating any more calories than they would on a normal day. The result was their muscles struggling to glucose into energy, even though they ate no more calories than usual. And this isn’t an isolated incident. It was found that eating processed foods killed more people prematurely then smoking(according to the NCBI)

Even when people think they are being careful, fast food companies can still pull a fast one. Most people are unable to correctly identify how much sodium they were eating daily(according to a Healthline article), and the hazardous food colors and additives aren’t helping in that regard. (according to a health line article) In studies where people think they are eating healthy, on average, they indershot by 20%.

Fast food, though it tastes good, is really bad for both your body, and your mind. Restaurants constantly attempt to trick you out of your money using psychological tricks, and making you think you're getting a good deal. So watch out, and next time you go to your local fast food joint, remember what you learned here.

15 Dollars An Hour Good or Bad?

February 24,2021 The United States senate has come to a decision the federal  minimum wage will not go up to 15 dollars. The minimum wage has been a topic of interest since 1938 where the fair labor act was established after pressure by many workers unions. The minimum wage has not gone up while the cost of living continues to be more due to inflation. But many small businesses argue that a 15 dollar wage would be impossible due to the high wages they would have to pay their employees. CNBC reports that a $15 minimum wage will result in layoffs, one-third of small business owners say.

The federal minimum hourly wage is just $7.25 and Congress has not increased it since 2009. Low wages hurt all workers and are particularly harmful to Black workers and other workers of color, especially women of color, who make up a disproportionate share of workers who are severely underpaid.

Supporters of the 15 dollar minimum wage also say that it would be economically viable as the benefits of gradually phasing in a $15 minimum wage by 2025 would be far-reaching, lifting pay for tens of millions of workers and helping reverse decades of growing pay inequality.

I interviewed my father to see his side of the story as he has worked minimum wage before and is a person of color.. “I remember the business I used to work at had to lay off some people when the minimum wage increased here in NY. I say that the minimum wage increase would be terrible in the United States.”

Raising the Minimum wage to 15 Dollars will raise prices for those who can afford it the least. Big businesses and high-end restaurants often support higher minimum wages as less competition from small businesses equal more profits for them.

It is unlikely to raise wages for the lowest-paid workers critics say. A higher wage mandate doesn’t create wealth; it merely shifts it around. The CBO finds that a $15 minimum wage will raise wages for some workers, result in layoffs for others and be a net loss for income overall.

Minimum wage here in the United States has been important ever since worker unions have been created. Business analysts and small business owners agree that 15 dollars an hour is too much for them to  pay especially in small states. While Big business owners and most minimum wage workers argue that 15 dollars an hour would be possible. The senate at the moment is leaning towards keeping the 7.25 minimum wage in place unless the United states dollar bill ever implodes due to inflation.
