Opinion: Is Pulling Hijab’s Okay?

by Zainib Khan & Jamira Regnier
Do you think pulling a Muslim’s hijab is ok or racial discrimination?

Female students wearing hijab to school face many difficulties. They often get discriminated against or even assaulted. In the world that we live in, it is not always safe for Muslim females to go out with a hijab.

Some people don't understand the true meaning of hijab, they think it is just a scarf wrapped around the head. The true meaning of a hijab for a Muslim female is her religion, her pride, and her respect. We should not underestimate the meaning of hijab, everyone deserves respect.

There are many incidents where Muslim females have been discriminated against over their hijabs. In many schools there have been reports of students and even teachers pulling off female’s hijabs, some people defend themselves by stating, “I was pulling off a hoodie” and it's wrong to even be touching a student. In the world we live in, we are told that we will be protected but instead we get harassed.

The United States president, Donald Trump has spread out a lot of hate toward  Muslims and their hijab. In an article by NBCnews, it states that,“A Muslim student at San Jose University was attacked from behind in a parking garage.” This incident happened hours after Trump had his win. The man ran up to the Muslim student, pulled off her hijab and choked her.

Another incident in California, where two men followed a Muslim student and made derogatory comments about Muslims. The comments were associated with how our President Trump views Muslims. The article states, “the men confronted the woman, stole her purse and car keys before fleeing the scene. They came back for her car while she was off searching for help.”

After Trump’s win, Islamophobia has been a fear nationwide, which is ridiculous. Islam is not about making people scared. Islam is the definition of love, happiness, and respect. Islam wants to spread love, not hate. As a Muslim, I know that we have to respect our elders, and give love to the younger. We are not there to hurt anyone or spread hate. Our goal is to spread happiness, and love all around the world.

We believe that if someone does something bad to you, do not do bad to them in return. My parents have always taught me to respect my elders and do good things to people, no matter if they are poor or rich. Muslims are humans after all, and as humans, we all do make mistakes and no one is perfect in this world.

One thing should not determined how we Muslims are. We are way better than your thinking. You say everyone is better than Muslims, but what have other people done? There have been almost 10 school shooting this year, and not all of them are involved with Muslims. So no one has the right to point a finger at us, make sure you look at yourself before pointing a finger at us.

As far as hijab goes, you also have no right to pull a Muslim’s hijab because Muslims don't judge anyone about their dress so they shouldn't be judged for their clothes. Islam has some regulations and rules, each us Muslims have to follow, just as other religions have rules that they follow.
