Never Been on a Team Before? Take the Shot. It’s Worth it!

By Mandy Belotte

I am a junior and I joined the tennis for the first time this year, and I can't  tell you how great of an experience it was for me. At first, I was a little nervous about trying out for tennis because I had never really played correctly or "seriously" at all. However, I still decided to try out for the team. Even though I did know how to play properly, I wanted to learn.

After the tryout, the coach told us that we all made the team, and I was thrilled. At the beginning of the season, my main concern was to get the tennis ball in proper court over the net. Then I learned that to be a successful tennis player; you must follow through with your shots. Following through with your shots in tennis allows the player to get a more accurate and consistent ball placement. This also enables the player to gain more momentum hitting the ball, making it hard for the receiver to hit the ball back. In tennis, we call this shot a "winner."

I loved playing tennis this year, and I will surely join the team again next fall. To improve for the 2020 season, I will be playing lots of wall ball. As well as working on maximizing my time and space on the court. Overall, this year's season was a blast, and could not have asked for better teammates. Also, congratulations to all the seniors who have played this year, you will be missed dearly.

My Hero Academia Doesn’t Deserve the Hype

By Kenneth Lopez

My Hero Academia is Japanese Manga that debuted in 2014 in the magazine, Weekly Shonen Jump. The story about a young boy who wanted to become the world’s greatest hero received an anime adaptation in 2016 has been soaring in popularity ever since. It is especially popular here in North America; with millions of fans young and old drawing fan art, cosplaying as their favorite characters and making countless amvs of their favorite moments in show or their favorite ships.

But despite this popularity, I (and a minority of people) do not feel this show is worth the hype and has a lot of problems that either no one has picked up or are being ignored.

The first problem I have with it is how similar it to other shonen (especially Naruto). You’ve got your underdog main character who has no superpowers (and in the future, might be revealed to have parents who were really important people and might be related to royalty)and lives in a world where everyone has a super power. He later gets a power to make himself feel better and gets respect from a high ranking member in his society. You have rival character foil for our mainlead. You have an expanded cast of characters who are all colorful and likable. And there’s a tournament arc later on.

Now this isn't just a problem with My Hero, it highlights more of the problem with the shonen genre and how oversaturated it is. Any idea you could come up with has already been done in another story. So the only way to make your story stand on its own comes down to two things: the writing and the characters. And My Hero Academia struggles with both.

Let’s begin with the characters, starting with the secondary characters. My Hero Academia has a huge cast of characters, a majority of them being pretty bland having no personality; only being defined by a certain trope. Uruaka is your standard romantic interest who doesn't stand on her own and is only there to cheer our protagonists on. The frog girl is…..uh….has frog powers I guess. The weird pervert midget is a pervert. That weird French guy is…..iritating and shouldn’t exist. I'm pretty sure you’ve noticed at this point that I’ve only referred to ¼ characters I listed by their first name and everyone else buy their defined trope, and that’s a major issue. If you are going to write a story where there's a huge cast, you have to give them some sort of personality to make them standout (like Naruto). If you struggle with writing for more than 5 or 6 characters, don’t write a story with a large amount of characters.

But that doesn’t mean the main cast is any good either. Though Izuku is one of the more relatable characters, I do question why he didn’t physically train himself to become a hero. In My Hero Academia, you need a quirk to become a hero and he wasn’t born with one. But you know who else is a superhero but doesn’t have a superpower, Batman! He was born with no superpowers but that didn’t stop him from becoming the badass hero that defends gotham. What this does is this gives unintentionally gives off the impression that Izuku is spoiled, which is not the case. In fact, why was he still holding onto that dream into his teenage years (when the show takes place). Realistically, after his dreams of becoming a hero had been squandered as a kid, he probably would’ve given it up as time went by and moved on. But he didn’t, he still held on to that dream, but yet did nothing to move closer to that goal. He didn’t learn any fighting moves, he didn’t train himself to become stronger, nothing! I mean, he did write down notes about heroes and their powers but they do nothing in the long run.

Bakugo is rival character of this show and his is unapologetically a complete bully. He has bullied Izuku since childhood (A/N: despite Izuku being bullied by Bakugo, he still looks up to him for some reason) and even told him to kill himself in the first episode. He’s an egotistical maniac who only wants to become a hero to be the best and not help others. And his temper is on another level, to the point of almost being a psychopath. It’s astonishing that he was able to enter the hero academy, and it’s more astonishing that this character is well beloved and attracts so many fangirls.

Todoroki is a Zuko clone, plain and simple. He has an abusive father, he got a scar in his childhood, he’s an outright rip off from Zuko from Avatar The Last Airbender. But well Zuku’s an actual well written character, Todoroki is not.

The only character in the main cast I sort of like is Ida. I really liked his character arc about avenging his brother and taking his hero name to honor his brother. Other than that, there’s not much to say about him.

Moving onto the writing, I absolutely hate the story structure and this leads to believe the author has no idea what he’s doing. To explain myself, I’ll go over the plot of Season 2.

The season begins with a tournament arc which isn’t that good but the season really picks up steam when we’re introducing the Stain, who injures Ida’s brother. After a less than impressive fight, Stain is defeated but not before exposing certain heroes and inspiring others to become villains. Now what do you think could come next after this very impactful arc? Our hero’s more on their guard as the attack from dangerous villains becoming more likely. The story picking up speed. But no. Instead, we just get more hero exams. Yes, that very dark story that could impact the world of My Hero is never added upon and is brushed aside to focus on more tensionless fights. This happens in Season 3 to my knowledge (considering I stopped watching mid way through Season 2). It opens with an intense arc with earth shattering events and the arc after that is just another tournament arc.

This is not how you write an interesting story! Take a look at Saint Seiya: the show begins with tournament arc but that's quickly scrapped when one of the Saints steals the prize. And after they defeated the villians and things seem like they’re gonna die down, our hero’s are ambushed again by another dangerous enemy and prize is stolen once again. That’s how you write a gripping and interesting story, you make the next arc more intense than the last. You don’t go from gripping plot to tensionless fluff to gripping plot! This gives off the impression that My Hero Academia doesn’t have a story and is just making up stuff as it’s going along.

There are more problems I have with shows like how the fights are uncreative and are over dramatic scuffles. Or how the author tries to flesh out bland background characters later into the story instead of doing it after they’re introduced. Or Izuku gains 6 more powers later on in the manga but I’m sure you don't want to be here for days.

Though My Hero Academia is popular, it’s quality isn’t equal to that. Sure the animation is fantastic, but that doesn’t fix the bland cast of characters, poorly written main leads, terrible story structure, and relying too much on it’s inspirations instead of carving out its own identity. At the time of writing this, the Season 4 is already out and I am not sure if it’s good or not. But what I can say is that there are more shonen anime out there that are worth more of your time than My Hero Academia.

Tom Brady is the G.O.A.T.

By Jordan Caddle

Tom Brady is the best football player in the NFL. He is currently the oldest player in the NFL. At 42 years old and he also holds the record for the oldest person to ever win the Super Bowl at the quarterback position.

Right now Tom Brady is leading his team to another playoff run. The Patriots are 9-1. He currently holds 54 NFL records. Even though he is the oldest player in the NFL he is still the best right now.

He was a sixth-round draft pick in the 2000 draft. He was the fourth quarterback on the Patriots depth chart, working his way up to become a starter. Nineteen seasons later he is a six-time Super Bowl winner. With the amount of experience he has he is teaching his younger teammates what to do in clutch moments and how to continue winning. Even though the weather in Boston isn't the best, even in the worst conditions he still finds a way to throw the ball and win games.

People may love to hate him, but he is the best at what he does.

AP Capstone- What is it?

By Jaci Gillen

AP Capstone is a brand new AP course offered to sophomores this year. What even is it? According to the College Board website, “AP Capstone™ is a diploma program from the College Board. It’s based on two year long AP courses: AP Seminar and AP Research. Rather than teaching subject-specific content, these courses develop students’ skills in research, analysis, evidence-based arguments, collaboration, writing, and presenting. Students who complete the two-year program can earn one of two different AP Capstone awards, which are valued by colleges across the United States and around the world.” As it is a relatively new course provided by the board, there are many questions surrounding it.

In our district, AP Seminar can be taken in place of 10th grade English. That is where Ms. Stamatiades, a high school English teacher comes in. Teaching alongside her is Ms. Cassa, a Social Studies teacher who joined us last year. Together they work together to incorporate the English, critical thinking, and research skills required for both the English regents and the AP Capstone class as required by the College Board. As to how the course will specifically operate in our school for 11th grade? We’ve yet to find out.

This class offers quite a different experience compared to those of other classes, especially the original AP course offered in 10th grade (Mr. Grey’s World History). My peers and I had a big adjustment period and are still adjusting. The assignments are specifically timed within the period and for each day; many of them involve working with peers you wouldn’t necessarily work with otherwise, and the class requires learning what almost seems like a whole new language. Each assignment works to develop certain skills that are beneficial in college and in one’s career, such as time management.

In AP Seminar, the first half of the year requires a group project and presentation that will be recorded and sent directly to College Board. During the second half, an individual project is required. Next year in AP Research, we are going to be tasked with researching a topic of our choice and writing a paper on it. Sounds a lot like college right? That’s precisely the point, it will offer experience that would put a student a step above the others when they have to write an extensive research paper in college. At the end of two years, if a student reaches the certain testing requirements (explained on the College Board website), a Capstone Diploma will be given. The skills taught in this class should be applicable to any area of interest which is an amazing opportunity!

At the same time, it is still an AP course and may not be suited for everyone, like any other college level class. The best way to discover if this course is for you, any upcoming sophomores, is to do your own research and talk to the adults that know you best as a student and a person.

Ms. Cassa developed her own reflections after attending  a Capstone training workshop, “AP Seminar is a place where students can experience the rigor of what it means to be a 21st century thinker and writer while diving deeper into what interests them most. AP Seminar is supposed to be a forum for questioning and exploration, expanding perspective, varied lens viewpoints, and evaluate collected evidence found from the most credible primary and secondary sources to understand, analyze, and support both their claims and counter-claims.”

Ms. Cassa added, "As a History teacher, my plan is to share sources that, similarly to enduring issues, push you to synthesize ideas and move in the direction of opening your interpretation to what it’s really like to live, learn, and shape different eras all over the world and measure how far we have or have not come.”

From an ELA standpoint, Ms. Stamatiades is working to help build the skills necessary to improve writing and skills utilized on the ELA Regents exam. She is modifying mini-lessons for struggle areas of writing with analysis and clarity.

In closing, Ms. Cassa said, We co-teach so our students can work collaboratively with different educators so we can determine strengths, weaknesses, and help our class maintain a flow of constant regrouping so teams can transform and transmit their mindset and ideas.

Keep an eye out for this brand new course and talk to us at the end of the year to find out what the first AP Capstone Seminar students of West Hempstead High School think!

Dedication For A Lost One

By Kayla Sohan

On the 18th of June 2018 A rapper was violently murdered in Deerfield Beach, Florida. Jahseh Onfroy, Aka XXXTentacion was by himself in the driver's seat of his car when he was shot multiple times by two men. His murder shocked the world, especially his close friend, singer Billie Ellish.

Billie Ellish is a 17 year old singer whose fame is growing more rapidly every week. She was one of Jahseh’s close friends, they always hung out when they had the chance since they were both out on tour. The day of Jahseh’s death Billie posted a video of herself crying on Instagram.

During her concert on October 20th 2018, Billie and her brother Finneas sung an unreleased song dedicated to Jahseh about his death. This song was named 6.18.18 (XXXTentacion tribute). As she sung this song during many concerts Billie never failed to breakdown and cry. She was always comforted by her fans and her brother Finneas.

In 6.18.18 the lyrics mention that she is aware that her friend is dead and she has accepted the fact that all her love can't bring him back to life. Billie is disappointed that she didn't get a chance to say goodbye.

If you listen to the song you can actually hear the heartbreak in her voice. She has moved many young people with her music. I hope she will continue to spread her joy and awareness about things in her life. Her message is about how tragedy can happen to anyone, so you better appreciate the people you have in your life.

Swim for the Win

By Alison Salinas

The Girls Varsity Swimming Team went to the divisionals this season. We have been working very hard since the beginning of our season. I have been on the team for two years now. This is my last year since I am now a senior. The team has such a strong bond this year. There are about 10 girls on the team along with our team manager. Our captain is Joey Axel and other swimmers include: Jennie Axel, Metabel Assefa, Anissa Chatman, Karina Fernandez, Aliyah Gani, Emily Oh, Sara Tarquino, Victoria Valette and yours truly, Alison Salinas. We also have our team manager Albert Boa. Our team is just one big family. The team is coached by Mrs. Dempsey.

We know almost everything about each other. We help each other in and out of the pool. We have encouraged each other to work very hard everyday. We have improved so much. Our dives have got so much better and times have gotten faster. This year we decided to do something new. We decide to do a bake sale to raise money for division shirts. Our bake sale did so well we raised more than enough money. This year we also got a banner from a local business that was generous enough to donate it. I designed the logo myself.

Many of us participated in the divisionals and 5 of us got to swim in the counties.  The relay team consisted of Joey, Emily, Aliyah, Jennie and myself.

From having our annual bagal breakfast and pasta party to division and counties. I wish the girls varsity swimming team the best of luck next year. Don’t miss me too much.

Kanye 2.0

By Kelecia Johnson

On October 25, the infamous Kanye West released his new album named, JESUS IS KING. Kanye mostly focused on hip-hop/ rap, and this album wasn’t any exception.  This is his ninth studio album, here he re-introduced gospel music through his own classic style of rap.

This album has been promoted throughout 2019 by the Sunday services hosted by Kanye himself. His primary hosting was held at Coachella’s Sunday service where he performed “Water,” the seventh of eleven tracks on this album. Kanye West also traveled to many different Sunday services, such as the Greater Allen AME Cathedral of New York to assist in celebrating their 185th anniversary. He used all these visits to promote his music.

The reactions to this latest masterpiece have been rather positive, and I personally  believe it’s been a breath of fresh air since it’s different from the typical rap culture of music. Overall, the vocals and instrumentals used were extremely powerful which gave off  the feeling of reflection. Kanye incorporated snippets of classical religious songs and scriptures from the Bible into his tracks; this emphasizes his purpose of this newly released artwork. In addition, there are tracks such as, “On God,” where he expresses feelings about his personal life, decisions and explains his passion towards this album.

Every track in this album by Kanye West has a different story behind it, but they are all connected which made the album feel like one big story with a form of modern day gospel.

West Hempstead High School Blood Drive

On Friday, The National Honor Society partnered with The New York Blood Center for our annual blood drive. In total we collected 52 donations which goes to save over 150 lives. There was a tremendous interest this year from both students and staff members. We exceeded our goal from last year which was 42 donors.
