Should College Tuition Be Free?

by Tejani Ten-hue

Should college tuition be free? This is a very controversial topic in the United States when college fees average around a staggering 25,000 - 34,000. College shouldn’t be tuition free but others think differently. Former President Obama attempted to move towards free college to eligible students but it did not seem to work out. Just hear me out on why college tuition should not be free.

If college tuition was free then where would the money be coming from? It would be too much money for the federal and state government to comprehend. America would start paying heavy priced taxes initially hurting the economy.

Another reason that college tuition shouldn’t be free is that it will create waiting lists because so many additional people will be attending inevitably putting a strain on state budgets, leading to cuts and decreased programs.

Another reason that college tuition shouldn’t be free is that the value of certain degrees would decrease because a lot more people are able to earn these degrees.

There are some people that believe college tuition should be free. Some benefits of free college is a better more educated workforce. According to the Article, Should College Be Free?  “So a better-educated workforce would help fill many of the skills gaps that prevent America's economy from growing faster.” Although this might sound good this won’t help the economy and promote improvements in social mobility needed in the United States.

Overall free tuition isn’t a good idea because it would just hurt the economy. The federal and state government simply can’t afford this. Heavy taxes will be put in place hurting the economy. Degrees will be less appreciated since so many people will earn them. As you can see college tuition will be a bad idea if its free.
