Red Ribbon Week Teaches Us About Dangerous Decisions

By Fizza Dar

Red Ribbon Week is a week-long event (October 23rd- 27th) used to spread awareness about the use of drugs, alcohol, and other harmful products.

The high school community and SADD team up for this yearly event to inform students about the dangers associated with destructive decisions.

Mr. McEntee and SADD members handed out new stickers for students and staff to wear in support of this week’s events.

During this week a totaled car was placed outside the high school. A speaker was brought in to speak to the senior class about the dangers of distracted driving. These speakers are a very important part of the high school Red Ribbon Week as the first-hand experiences are shared with raw emotions and the speaker was able to relate to the students on a more personal level.

Also during the middle of the week, SADD members headed to the middle school to play Bingo and hand out ribbons. The Bingo game allowed for the 6th and 7th graders to learn about the negative effects of drugs with the facts being shared but still enjoy their time.

To wrap up the week there were simulations for students to participate in throughout their lunch period which included wearing the drunk goggles and walking in a straight line or putting a puzzle together. These various exercises were to simulate the effect drinking or using drugs can have on your coordination. Finally, students signed a banner, now displayed in the cafeteria, pledging to make safe decisions for themselves.
