Chasing Your Dream In All American

By: Tia Hawat, entertainment reporter, December 15, 2020

Are you sitting bored at home with absolutely nothing to do? All American is a must watch show that you can now stream on Netflix. The first two seasons are on Netflix and the third season just began last month on the CW network. It first premiered on The CW on October 10, 2018. All American is one of the highest fan rated sports drama television series of 2020. The series is directed by Rose Troche.

All American is a show based on a true story of an American football player named Spencer Paysinger. Spencer Paysinger spoke openly about the challenges he faced in his early career to make it where he is now today. Daniel Ezra stars and plays this character and faces many hardships throughout the show. He lives in a town called Crenshaw and got the chance to play in Beverly Hills and attend a good high school seeing two different versions of the world.

His mother gave him and his brother as much as she could being the only one in the household raising them. In the show, people viewed each other differently based on their race, but that didn't stop Spencer from chasing his dream and becoming the best version of himself. Spencer is very overprotective of his friends and family and will do anything for them. He left his tough side of the town school to attend a predominantly white high school in the wealthy part of town.

Throughout the show, there were people shooting at others for no reason but they were in a hood town and Spencer wants to change that and make it better. Spencer said, “We watching bodies drop like flies like it’s normal. This is not normal! It ain’t just another day in the neighborhood. Kids dying over nothing is not the answer. Killing each other is not the answer, man. Revenge is not the answer! We all we got. If we destroy each other, who else gonna fight for us?” Spencer just wants everyone to stay safe because he has such a good heart and he puts others before himself.

Most likely all teens and adults would enjoy this show. I feel like many could relate to what happens in Spencer's life and really enjoy it. It is thrilling and exciting to see what will happen because after an episode is done you will just want to binge-watch the whole series. I also think that because this is based on a true story it’s also more interesting to see how things will turn out for the entire cast. From 1-5, I would rate this show at 4.7 because of how interesting it is. This drama makes it all worth it and all the juicy things that happen throughout the show. In 2019, the cast received the Black Reel Award for Outstanding Drama Series.

A must watch television show after all these years is The Good Place, created by Micheal Schur. The series first aired on NBC on September 19, 2016, fans have been in love with this show right from the start. A little over a year after the show's debut it started streaming on Nexflix and received an even wider audience with some fans binging the whole show in a day.

The show centers around the afterlife of main character Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell) finding out she is in what is known as “the good place” soon realizing she is there by mistake. The show explores her life and the life of many other characters whilst in the afterlife. The show, unfortunately, was canceled after its fourth season; however, it is still available on multiple streaming platforms such as Netflix, Youtube, Amazon Prime Video, and more.

The Good Place begins with us meeting the protagonist Eleanor as she has just entered into the “Good Place.” At death, everybody is assigned a numerical score based on their morals throughout their life. People with a high score were sent to “the Good Place” people who failed to achieve this score were sent to “the Bad Place” She is convinced there has been a mistake and wrongfully placed there. Her soulmate, Chidi, played by William Jackson Harper, is a professor of ethics and moral philosophy, who attempts to teach her ethics so that she can earn her presence there.

Jason, played by Manny Jacinto, like Eleanor believes he is sent to The Good Place by mistake. His soulmate named Tati, played by Jameela Jamil,  is a wealthy philanthropist and fashion model who believes she belongs in “the Good Place.” Throughout the four seasons, we navigate Eleanor’s life and many others and her experiences in “the Good Place.” While meeting other characters along the way, we see the metaphorical rollercoaster that Eleanor is put through throughout the series.
