Cheerleaders Go to Nationals in Disney World

by Laura Padilla, Freshman reporter

This year the West Hempstead Varsity Cheerleading team received a bid to Nationals for the first time ever in West Hempstead history.

The cheerleaders went to a competition and thought they lost their chance of going to nationals but it seemed that the people who manage the scores got confused and said the team didn't place but really they did and they placed third.

The coaches, Ms. Spano and Ms.Longo, really outdid themselves with these cheer routines. The cheer routines were lively and so outstanding that they earned the girls a trip to Nationals. Not only did the coaches work hard but the team put in so much effort. These girls struggled and practiced every week, they put their blood, sweat, and tears into these routines.

This season the varsity team participated in approximately 8 competitions. The girls left for Nationals on February 9th and came back on the 12th. This year Nationals were held at Disney, so while the girls practiced their routines they also got to enjoy the fascinating, “magic-filled” park.

Sadly, the girls didn't make it into the semifinal round but everyone is so proud of the team because even if they didn't make it to the next round they were the first cheerleading team in West Hempstead to make it this far.

Some of the girls on the team were asked about how they felt about going to nationals. Senior and Varsity Cheerleading captain Victoria Napolitano said, “ I feel super happy about going to nationals, we worked so hard for this and I’m glad I get to go through this experience as a senior.”

Sophomore and Varsity Cheerleading flyer Victoria Tudisco said, “ Well, it's my first time going to nationals, and it's the first time in West Hempstead history and I’m so excited and I’m also proud of my team.”

Freshmen Camila Hernandez originally said, “I’m super excited to go to Disney with the best team and I just hope we do really great.”

The girls did not make it to the finals, but as their coach said, “They left it all on the mats.”

These girls gave their all for this competition and look forward to working even harder next year to return Disney.
